The Administra Geral dos Diamantes (General Diamond Administration) issued the earliest Brazilian paper money between the years of 1770 and 1793 in order to pay diamond prospectors. The real was adopted as the official currency of Brazil in 1790, and remained in use until 1942, when it was replaced by the cruzeiro. The cruzeiro was the currency of Brazil from 1942 to 1986 and again between 1990 and 1993. After three decades of high inflation the modern real was re introduced in 1994 as part of a monetary reform to control rising prices.
The present day currency of Brazil has reverted back to the real, its sign is R$ and its ISO code is BRL. The currency is subdivided into 100 centavos ("hundredths"). In April 2000, in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Portuguese arrival on Brazilian shores, the Brazilian Central Bank introduced a polymer 10 real banknote into circulation. On February 3, 2010 the Central Bank of Brazil announced notes will have different sizes according to their values to help vision-impaired people and a new design that added security enhancements which aim to reduce counterfeiting.
