Croatia to Adopt Euro as its Legal Tender from 2023: What Does It Mean for British Travel Enthusiasts?

The crystal blue waters of Croatia have always attracted tourists from across the world. Even Europeans, when deciding where to spend their vacation, the country's coastlines are usually at the top of their lists.

Like many travel enthusiasts, you too might have planned your next trip to the Kingdom of Serbs way ahead of time. However, you would have to make a few changes as Croatia is about to go through some of its own.

EU Gave Croatia Green Light to Start Using EUR

Though the country had been a part of the EU since 2013, it continued to use Kuna as its currency. Hence, many anticipated, "when will Croatia adopt the Euro".

On 12th July, the European Union signed the remaining 3 legal acts to officially welcome Croatia into the Eurozone. Apart from enjoying other facilities of being an EU member country, starting 1st January 2023, it will also use Euro as its legal tender.

This means any individual from another EU country can visit Croatia without a visa. One would also not have to exchange currencies, saving them both time and effort.

However, this is only the scenario if you belong to any of the 19 other member countries.

So, if you were searching "Is Croatia in the Euro using countries' list?"

Yes, it will only use EUR as its official currency from the beginning of the upcoming year.

Currency Exchange

This new addition is good news if you frequent the EU countries a lot. As now there is another country you can travel to if you just exchange your GBP to EUR. However, you might have to buy back your currency should you have some Kunas from your last trip.

They will no longer remain valid, and you might have to keep them as souvenirs post 1st January 2023.

However, can you use Euros in Croatia now?

The major hotels and banks accept credit and debit cards of major foreign currencies. Nevertheless, you would have to exchange the Euros to Croatian Kuna to make standard transactions prior to the date mentioned above.

It is understandable that you dread visiting a bank or bureau de change due to their unreasonable exchange rates and lengthy procedures.

Also, if you decide to exchange the old currency of Croatia to Euros after landing there, you would have to pay heavy exchange fees. Meaning you would get way less for your Kunas than you should.

But who said currency exchange has to be complicated when technology has engulfed everything?

Visa Requirements for British Travelers

Even though the United Kingdom is no longer a part of the EU, you still do not require a visa to visit one of its member countries.

Croatia Eurozone follows the Schengen rules when granting entry to a third-party country. So, after officially becoming a part of the EU, its entry regulations do not change. As a British citizen, you can stay visa-free in Croatia for up to 90 days within a span of 180 days.

However, you must properly explain your cause of travel to the immigration authorities. You can

As a tourist

For a short course

To attend a sports event

To visit a family member

ETIAS - Post May 2023

The regulations mentioned above are only valid until May 2023. Should you choose to travel post that, you would also have to apply for an ETIAS, a new visa waiver mandate for visa-exempt individuals from non-EU countries.

Once approved, it is valid until your passport expires in 3 years, whichever comes first. This means that you do not have to apply for it every time you choose to visit Croatia. With an ETIAS, an individual can reside for 90 days in any country that falls under the Schengen area per 180 days.

So, if you plan to catch the Sunset Festival in Croatia next year, know these are changes you need to keep in mind. While the discrepancies are minor, should you ignore them, you might not enjoy your visit there to the fullest

Especially, do remember to bring Euros and not Kunas when you visit Croatia, else your trip will end the moment you land there.
