1. Lev is the official currency of Bulgaria. Etymologically the name means Lion.
2. Bulgarian Lev is abbreviated as BGN and pegged to the Euro at a rate of 1 euro = 1.95583 Lev.
3. Official symbol of BGN is ЛB.
4. History of Bulgarian Lev can be divided into 4 phases. The first period dates back to 1881-1952, when it was equivalent to 1 French franc. Following the wartime inflation, the Old Lev was replaced by a new Lev at an exchange rate of - 1 new ЛB = 100 old ЛB in 1952.
5. The third phase of BGN began in 1962 when a redenomination took place, resulting in an exchange rate of - 1.17 lev = 1 U. S. dollar. Finally, the 4th phase of BGN began in 1999 when this currency was redenominated once again at an exchange rate of 1000: 1, and 1 new ЛB equalled 1 Deutsche Mark.
6. BGN banknotes are issued by the Bulgarian National Bank. The most used denominations are 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 Lev.
