1. Rand is the national currency of South Africa. It's abbreviated as ZAR and represented by the symbol "R".
2. South African Rand was introduced in February 1961, just 3 months before Republic of South Africa was established. Etymologically, Rand comes from "Witwatersrand," meaning white waters ridge upon which Johannesburg and most of South Africa's gold are built.
3. ZAR is also a legal tender of Eswatini, Lesotho and Namibia. All 3 countries peg their national currency to Rand.
4. The issuance right of ZAR is primarily held by the South African Reserve Bank.
5. ZAR bank notes are available in R 10, R 20, R 50, R 100, R 200 denominations.
