1. Dominican Peso or Peso Dominicano is the official currency of the Dominican Republic since 2011, and it is abbreviated as DOP.
2. DOP first came into existence and was announced for circulation after the country got independence from Haiti in 1844 and replaced the Haitian gourde at par.
3. Due to the emergence of currency like the franco, DOP has gone through many oscillations after its existence came into reality but the latter could not replace it.
4. However, Dominican Peso was later replaced by the U.S. Dollars at an estimate of 5 pesos to the dollar in 1905 which continued till 1947.
5. In addition, its issuance lies with the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic, which also manages the country's foreign exchange services.
6. Dominican banknotes are available in 50RD$, 100RD$, 200RD$, 500RD$, 1000RD$ and 2000RD$ denominations.
7. Also, DOP after 1963 became a free-floating fiat currency that is not backed by any valuable commodity.
