1. The national currency of Peru is Peruvian Nuevo Sol and is abbreviated as PEN.
2. Sol is derived from the Latin word solidus, which means sun in Spanish; hence it also contains continuity from the old Peruvian inti, which also means Sun God of the Incas.
3. Sol got materialised in 1863, but due to massive inflation, sol was replaced by inti at a ratio of 1000:1.
4. But inti was again scrapped and was replaced by a new currency Nuevo Sol due to economic distress and bouts of hyperinflation in 1991.
5. Sol is controlled and managed by the Central Reserve Bank of Peru.
6. The available denominations are in 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 soles.
7. PEN is also subdivided into 100 centimos, and their available denominations are in S/5, S/2, S/1, and 10, 20 and 50 centimos.
